Welcome to the Sugar Labs project for Replacing Textbooks Alpha 1.0.
Netbook computers like the OLPC XO family cost much less than printed textbooks in most countries. When we can supply Free digital Open Education Resources (OERs) for enough subjects at enough age or grade levels for each country in whichever languages it needs, the cost of switching to XOs becomes negative. There are some countries that cannot afford adequate textbooks, where some other method of priming the pump will be required. Once education takes hold, and graduates routinely get and create jobs, and pay taxes, countries will break out of the vicious circle of poverty, corruption, and oppression, and enter the virtuous cycle of continuing development. Apart from the recurring problem of gross financial mismanagement that plagues rich and poor countries alike.
The mission, then, is OERs for all subjects, at all ages or grade levels, for all countries, in all languages needed. We will leave it up to each language community to choose whether to make the effort to have their children educated in their own language, and we will support those who choose to do so right here.
